12 Bugs We’ve Found In iPhone OS 3.0

Thursday, June 18th, 2009
  1. Multimedia messaging does not support sculpture, macrame, or interpretive dance.
  2. Voice memo recordings totally don't sound like me. I don't sound like that, do I? Seriously?
  3. Turned on adult content filter but everybody in my videos still has their clothes on.
  4. Adding a task to calendar did not result in task getting done.
  5. Clicked this blue "compass" icon but kept getting some stupid web browser.

Apple Can Remotely Disable iPhone Apps

Wednesday, August 13th, 2008

According to iPhone Atlas and iPhone hacker-extraordinaire Jonathan Zdziarski, Apple has readied a blacklisting system which allows the company to remotely disable applications on your device. Apparently, the new 2.x firmware contains a URL which points to a page containing a list of “unauthorized” apps — a move which suggests that the device makes occasional contact with Apple’s servers to see if anything is amiss on your phone. In Jonathan’s words:

iPhone 3G Solar Charging Case

Tuesday, August 5th, 2008

For some reason it’s been next to impossible to find a 16GB black 3G iPhone where I live, but I have spent plenty of time playing with an 8GB model, and I can attest to the fact that battery life isn’t one of the phone’s strong points. To remedy this situation a bunch of third-party battery pack accessories have been hitting the market, but this is the first one I’ve seen that also incorporates a solar panel. Now obviously the iPhone can’t be powered by solar energy alone (at least with a panel this small) so the case also features a 1500 mAh battery that can be used to provide one full charge for your iPhone.

The Samsung Instinct (aka iPhone Hunter)

Friday, June 13th, 2008

Despite what we and other media have hinted at, despite what Sprint itself is spending a lot of money trying to convey, the Samsung Instinct is not an iPhone killer. To be sure, Samsung and Sprint borrowed liberally from the iPhone playbook when it came to look and feel. But the comparison itself isn’t fair: The iPhone is a software platform that is growing every day, soon to have a host of applications that put it squarely in the smartphone category along with BlackBerry, Palm and Windows Mobile. The Samsung Instinct will never be mistaken for a smartphone. Then what is it? It’s the best carrier-centric feature phone I’ve ever seen, a delight to use for many—though not all—of its intended purposes.

Due to business decisions Apple and the US carriers have made, most Americans are still not faced with the choice to buy an iPhone or not. They have to pick the best “feature phone” that their carrier has to offer. That is, a phone that costs somewhere between $50 and $250, built first and foremost to make voice calls, then serve additional social purposes—messaging, photos, etc.—and, finally, offer data connectivity to the web but more importantly to e-mail.

You can get a domain name on Yahoo for 1.99. They do try to sneak in a reoccuring charge in future years of 34.99 but you can cancel at any time. What I often do for blogs and such is register a new yahoo account… participate in this offer… set the domain to forward and [...]

Leaked Windows Mobile 6.5 ROM image indicates just minor improvements over 6.1

We are slowly sick and tired of reporting various rumors about Windows Mobile 6.5 considering that in roughly 3 weeks everything will be known, but apparently some early version of Windows Mobile 6.5 for certain old model of a Windows Mobile phone has leaked, and it is inept beyond belief…

CSI Stick grabs data from cell phones

If someone asks to borrow your cell phone, or you leave it unattended, beware!
Unless you actually watch them use it, they may be secretly grabbing every piece of your information on the device, even deleted messages. If you leave your phone sitting on your desk, or in the center console of your car while the [...]
